MINEOLA, NY – In a recent incident in Mineola, a Brooklyn man was arrested for attempted grand larceny. The incident took place on Monday, April 1, 2024, at approximately 12:25 pm.
The victim, a 57-year-old woman, received a call from an individual claiming to be an employee of Microsoft. The caller informed her of a gambling charge amounting to $30,000 on her account. Shortly after, she received another call, this time from a person who identified themselves as a Chase Fraud Prevention employee. The second caller convinced the victim to withdraw $30,000 in cash from her Chase account to settle the alleged debt. The caller assured her that an agent would meet her at her residence to collect the payment.
However, the victim grew suspicious after withdrawing the money and promptly notified the police. Nassau County Third Squad Detectives conducted a thorough investigation, which led to the arrest of Yongkang Weng, a 31-year-old resident of 931 53rd Street.
Weng has been charged with attempted grand larceny in the third degree, attempted conspiracy in the fifth degree, and attempted scheme to defraud in the second degree. His arraignment was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the First District Court in Hempstead.
