WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney has made a notable break with her party, announcing her decision to vote for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. Speaking at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy, Cheney emphasized the significant threat she believes Donald Trump poses to the nation.

As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this,” Cheney remarked. “Not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”

Cheney, once a key figure in the Republican Party and the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, has been a staunch critic of Trump, particularly following the January 6 Capitol insurrection. Her vote to impeach Trump and continued opposition to his claims of election fraud led to her being ousted from her leadership position within the GOP in 2021. She later served as vice chair of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack, further solidifying her break from Trump-aligned Republicans.

The decision to back Harris, particularly in a battleground state like North Carolina, underscores Cheney’s belief that voters must prioritize defeating Trump over any third-party or write-in efforts. Cheney made it clear that, in swing states, there’s no room for symbolic votes.

I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” she stressed.

The Harris campaign welcomed Cheney’s endorsement, highlighting her commitment to protecting the Constitution. This move aligns Cheney with other Republicans who have similarly voiced support for Democrats in efforts to prevent a Trump return to the White House.

Cheney’s choice to support Harris represents a dramatic shift from her traditional conservative roots and is part of her broader strategy to combat Trump’s continued influence in U.S. politics.
