BABYLON, NY – A recent outbreak of listeria linked to Boar’s Head deli meats has sent shockwaves through the food industry, particularly on Long Island, New York. The outbreak has resulted in widespread recalls, consumer anxiety, and significant economic impacts for local businesses.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that the outbreak has sickened individuals in multiple states, leading to several deaths. The affected products, including liverwurst and other deli meats, were produced at a Boar’s Head facility in Virginia.

Long Island, known for its vibrant deli scene, has been particularly hard-hit by the outbreak. Countless delis and grocery stores that rely on Boar’s Head products have been forced to remove them from their shelves. Many consumers on Long Island have expressed concern and uncertainty about the safety of other deli meats. The outbreak has prompted a heightened awareness of foodborne illnesses and the importance of proper food handling.  

In response, several delis on Long Island have begun producing their own cold cuts to ensure the safety and quality of their products. This has been a strategic move to maintain customer confidence and mitigate the impact of the recall.  

One notable example is Harbor Deli in Port Washington, which has started roasting its own turkey breast and offering other house-made deli meats. This shift has not only helped to maintain business but has also allowed the deli to differentiate itself and provide a unique product to its customers.

Industry Response and Consumer Safety

Boar’s Head has issued a recall for the affected products and is cooperating with health authorities to investigate the cause of the outbreak. The company has also implemented measures to improve food safety practices at its facilities.  

Health officials are urging consumers to be cautious when purchasing and consuming deli meats. They recommend cooking these products thoroughly to kill any harmful bacteria. Additionally, individuals with weakened immune systems or pregnant women should exercise extra caution.
