JAMAICA, NY – New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $150 million investment to enhance connectivity between Long Island MacArthur Airport and the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Ronkonkoma Station. This funding aims to construct a pedestrian walkway linking the proposed North Terminal at MacArthur Airport directly to the Ronkonkoma LIRR station, facilitating seamless travel for passengers.

This initiative builds upon a previous $40 million commitment by the state in 2022 for the development of the new North Terminal adjacent to the train station. The project encompasses the acquisition of a 48-acre parcel, redesigning road networks, and implementing various infrastructure upgrades to improve passenger experience and reduce travel times.

Suffolk County is also contributing at least $50 million towards this endeavor, underscoring a collaborative effort to bolster the region’s transportation infrastructure. The Town of Islip, which owns and operates MacArthur Airport, is actively involved in the project, aiming to position the airport as a key transportation hub for Long Island.

In addition to enhancing local transit, this development aligns with broader plans to expand rail services in the area. In January 2025, officials announced that Amtrak’s Northeast Regional service would extend to the Ronkonkoma station, with operations expected to commence by 2028. This extension will provide inter-city rail service to MacArthur Airport, further integrating the region’s transportation network.

These strategic investments are poised to stimulate economic growth, create quality jobs, and offer Long Island residents and visitors improved travel options. By directly connecting air travel with rail services, the initiative aims to reduce road congestion and promote sustainable transit solutions in the region.
